New Side Hustle: Dumpster Diving, at College Campuses?

You’ve heard about the side-hustles where people try to make extra money by flipping homes, finding and re-selling “vintage” items, and buying storage units, without knowing what’s in them.  But this is new.

There’s an article out about a couple of friends who go dumpster-diving, around college campuses.

The idea is that as students move out for the year, like around now, they’re ditching valuable stuff like furniture, clothing, electronics, and appliances.  Some stuff they may have only had in their dorms for less than a year.

It makes sense, especially at expensive colleges, where rich kids are fine leaving their “old” stuff behind.

The friends say they make a good living doing it, and have even funded vacations by finding, organizing, and cleaning the trash and then re-selling it.

And they don’t even need to buy a lot of the cleaning supplies, because that’s another thing that the students are just tossing from their dorms and apartments.

One of them says, “Every day is like Christmas morning, this is a really fun hobby that’s definitely changed our lives.  It feels good to know that we saved something, giving it a second life with people who really need it.”

(That’s nice.  But it IS worth pointing out that college students are also DISGUSTING . . . so while some of this “trash” may have been barely used over the school year, that doesn’t mean it’s anywhere near hygienic.)
