Have you ever picked a restaurant, hoping for just a solid dining experience, only to be triggered by the wannabe fancy restaurant descriptions on the menu?
Things like “foraged”, “locally-sourced”, “infused”, “dusting”, and “nestled on a bed of [blank]”, that make you think this place is just trying to pass off its higher prices with VOCAB.
People on social media are listing the “fancy food words” from menus that “instantly make them roll their eyes.” And here are some good ones:
1. “Hand-cut.” Surely there was a knife involved.
2. “Seasonal fruit.” When it always seems to be melon and grapes.
3. “Seasonal vegetable.” When it always seems to be asparagus.
4. “Hand-crafted.” So it isn’t just iced tea out of a jug from the store?
5. “Deconstructed.” Just say it’s a plate of ingredients.
6. “Foam.”
7. “Compote.” Ooh, so this place has more than just everyday jam!
8. “Curated.” This is a restaurant, not a museum.
9. “Medley.” So, NOT “curated.”
10. “Farm-to-table.” Sounds fresh, but there’s a LOT of gray area there.
11. “Hand-helds.” As opposed to, you know, “sandwiches.”
12. “Open-faced.” As opposed to, you know, “HALF a sandwich.”
13. “Amuse bouche.”
14. “Cauliflower steak.”
15. “Artisanal.”
16. “Market price.” Instead of an actually-listed price.
17. “Freshly-dug potatoes.” (???)
18. “Fresh cracked eggs.” As opposed to . . . ???
