No matter how far A.I. and other online services have come, there’s nothing like having an ACTUAL HUMAN handle a translation, or to edit typos and other mix-ups.
A website has a rundown of “poor souls who were led very astray by Google Translate”, and it’s good for a few laughs and maybe a little pity. Here are a few of the best ones:
1. A sign promoting WI-FI accidentally used WIFE. It said, “No WIFE, no problem! We FREE you 1 MONTH WIFE to try. If not satisfied, just return it to us within 30 days. No need to pay!” (I don’t think they even bothered to use Google Translate.)
2. A sign outside a place in Asia said in English: “Dying right here is strictly prohibited.” That would seem like a fairly significant problem.
3. An outdoor sign in the wilderness has this English translation: “The future is dangerous. Don’t go any further please.”
4. A sign at a store said, “Video monitoring in progress. We PROSTITUTE shoplifters.”
5. A notice at a bakery said, “Do not touch bread with hands. Please use tongue.”
6. A translated description of a menu item was: “Braised duck with two kinds of bacteria.”
7. A sign outside a pizza place said: “Fresh. Always. DELIRIOUS.” That’s probably supposed to be DELICIOUS.
8. A box for a product warned users, “Please stay away from infants.”
9. A sign outside a business said, “Closed for REVOLUTION. Open soon.”
10. A sign on a gate said, “Private PROBABLY. No trespassing.”
BONUS: An English description on some baby wipes says, “Super super soft, fragrance, effectively prevent RED ASS 99.9%.”
