Gas prices are sky high, and soon, the pumps might ask if we’d prefer to pay in “four easy payments of $19.95.” (Which could be enticing if they throw in a free tote bag.) (???)
A gas station in California is making news for charging $9.99 a gallon for premium. The owner says it would be MORE, but they’re limited by the number of DIGITS on the pump. The cost for regular isn’t much better: $9.39.
This sounds like social media fake news, but there’s a reason: This station is located in Big Sur, in a remote area along the coast. There isn’t room for much along the roads in the area, and the station itself doesn’t have electricity, and is run on their own GENERATORS. So, it’s only PARTIAL gouging.
One driver said, “They probably could charge $20, and if you have to get gas, you have to get gas.”
Naturally, most people treat it as a last resort, and just get a few gallons to get through the area. There’s a sign that says the closest gas is 40 miles away to the north, and 12 miles away to the south.
For what it’s worth, the national average is up to $4.08 a gallon, while the statewide average in California is $5.89.
(KSBW has a video news report on this gas station, which is called Gorda By the Sea, along with drivers’ reactions.)
