Someone Cut Their Heat to Save Money, Pipes Burst, and the Home Turned Into a Frozen, “Ice Castle”

A massive winter storm will be plowing through most of the Eastern part of the country this weekend, from New Mexico across to the Mid-Atlantic and New England.  So, if you’re heading out to avoid it, don’t turn your heat ALL the way off.

An apartment in Quebec, Canada turned into an actual “ice castle” because the renter decided to cut the heat completely to save money.

They weren’t there, and didn’t want to heat an empty home, but temperatures outside (and inside) got SO FRIGID that the water pipes burst, shooting water into the apartment.  Then THAT water froze too.

The walls, the ceiling, the furniture, and even the appliances were later found covered in thick ice.  It also created abstract “ice sculptures” everywhere, and the floor was covered by about a foot of ice.

The building owner evicted the tenant, and they’re basically going to have to strip the whole place down to get all the ice, water, and moisture out.

(You can find more footage of this “ice castle” in this news report.)

(For the record, the tenant wasn’t just evicted because they made this mistake. They apparently hadn’t been there in months, and had also been delinquent on rent during all that time.)
