It’s National Taco Day! What Topping Can Ruin a Taco?

Today is not only “Taco Tuesday,” it’s also National Taco Day.  Previously, it was always October 4th, but last year they changed it so that it falls on the first Tuesday of October, for the “Taco Tuesday” tie-in.

Naturally, many places are having special deals on tacos today, mostly through loyalty apps and programs.  Taco Bell is offering soft tacos for a buck, Jack in the Box has two free tacos with a purchase, and there are also deals at Del Taco, 7-Eleven, El Pollo Loco, and Moe’s Southwest Grill.  (And even more.)

Tacos are MASSIVELY popular in the U.S., because they’re good, even when they’re bad.  But if you try hard enough, you CAN ruin a taco.

A while back, a food blog asked, “What’s the absolute WORST taco topping?”  The most popular responses include:

1.  Cilantro, which is notoriously divisive.

2.  Black olives, which are also fairly divisive.

3.  Lettuce.  It’s unclear if the main issue is wilted lettuce, the wrong type, OR if people are just opposed to “unnecessary” greens.

4.  Cheese.  This may come from people who are lactose intolerant, but several people specifically mentioned American cheese or liquid cheese sauce.

5.  Sour cream.

6.  Pineapple.  (???)

7.  Radish.

8.  Broccoli.

9.  Onion, particularly raw onion.

10.  Tomato, particularly raw or “mushy” tomato.

11.  Salsa, especially jarred salsa.

12.  Hot sauce, mainly TOO MUCH of it.

13.  Rice.

14.  Beans.

15.  Avocado or guacamole.  This is also controversial.  But it seems like more people are opposed to WARM guacamole or grilled avocado.
