Ed Sheeran, a massive fan of Wheatus’ eternal 2000 jam “Teenage Dirtbag,” invited frontman Brendan B. Brown onstage at his show in Hamburg, Germany to perform a cover of the song.
Sheeran wasn’t just recruiting Brown to fulfill his own adolescent dreams; in an Instagram post (see below) celebrating the collaborative performance, Sheeran explained that he and his two childhood friends had played in a band when they were 12-years-old, with “Teenage Dirtbag” being one of their signature songs. The trio had recently reformed after 20 years to play at a friend’s wedding, and Sheeran thought it’d be a good idea to perform a reunited rendition of “Teenage Dirtbag” at one of his concerts, with Wheatus’ original singer in tow. “So I emailed Brendan, and here we are!” Sheeran exclaimed.
Brown happily fulfilled his “Teenage Dirtbag” duties at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, with Sheeran singing along but mostly accompanying the frontman on guitar and his two mates (Rory and Fred Clifford) on the drums and bass, respectively. “One of my fav moments ever on stage, thank you Brendan,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram. “What a night.” Watch Sheeran’s recap of the Brown’s guest performance along with a fan-captured video of moment below.
Ed Sheeran is in the midst of a European tour supporting Play, his upcoming eighth album, out September 12th. Get tickets to see Sheeran and his in-the-round stadium show here. Meanwhile, Sheeran recently contributed to the soundtrack for F1: The Movie with “Drive,” a rock song that features Dave Grohl on drums and John Mayer on guitar.
