TheTopicalFruit.com did another round-up of 10 things that happened 10 years ago this week. Here’s what was in the news a decade ago.
1. Joey Chestnut lost the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest for the first time in eight years. He ate 60, and competitive eater Matt Stonie ate 62. It’s still the ONLY time he’s competed and lost since 2006. He holds the world record of 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes, set in 2021.
2. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their divorce. The announcement came one day after their 10th anniversary.
3. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis got married. They tied the knot on July 4th, 2015, 17 years after first meeting as cast members on “That ’70s Show”.
4. Donald Trump heard “you’re fired” over and over again. NBC, Macy’s, NASCAR, and others dumped him after he launched his campaign and called Mexican immigrants “rapists.”
5. Diddy fell in a hole at the BET Awards. He was performing with Lil Kim, Mace, Faith Evans, and others, while celebrating the 20th anniversary of Bad Boy Records.
6. Rihanna did something no other artist had done. The RIAA announced she was the first artist to rack up more than 100 million gold & platinum song certifications.
7. “The Tonight Show” was on hiatus after Jimmy Fallon almost lost a finger. He tripped on a rug, caught himself on a countertop, and his wedding band caused a “ring avulsion.” He was in the I.C.U. for 10 days.
8. “Crypto” was giving people diarrhea. (???) A disease called cryptosporidium, or “crypto” for short, was infecting pools and hot tubs and making people ill. Most people still hadn’t heard of crypto the CURRENCY yet.
9. People were wondering if “South Park” would make it to 20. Co-creator Matt Stone calmed fans’ nerves by saying they wouldn’t stop unless it got canceled. Season 27 is set to premiere next Wednesday, July 9th.
10. The trailer for “Creed” was released. People weren’t sure if the “Rocky” spinoff would work. It went on to make $174 million. “Creed 2” and “Creed 3” made even more.
