If your excuse for not eating vegetables was that onions make you cry, you might have to find another excuse.
Scientists in Japan have created an onion that does not make your eyes water when it’s chopped. They’ve been working on it for over 20 years, and you could start seeing them in stores everywhere soon.
It’s called the “Smile Ball”, yup, for real. And in addition to not making you cry, it also doesn’t smell as much as a regular onion, and it’s much sweeter.
Onions make your eyes water because they release a volatile gas when they’re damaged, like being cut with a knife. The gasses react with the moisture in your eye, and your body creates tears to flush out the irritant.
The Smile Ball has been bred to remove the enzyme responsible for that, while keeping the same taste and nutritional value.
It’s unclear when you will see them in stores, but they’re already popping up in the U.S., although sadly, they’re going under a different name. They’re being called “Goldies” in America.
