Nearly 30 years into their illustrious career, Gorillaz made their long-awaited debut on this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live. Making up for lost time, Damon Albarn dedicated the night’s first performance to the band’s 2001 debut single, “Clint Eastwood.” Del the Funky Homosapien was, of course, on hand to deliver his verse on the beloved track. Gorillaz then turned to their new album, The Mountain, performing the title track with guest appearances from Asha Puthli, Black Thought, and Anoushka Shankar. If you haven’t already, be sure to read our Gorillaz cover story, “Highest Peak.” Here, founders/creative Albarn and co-founder Jamie Hewlett discuss The Mountain and how they turned grief and global collaboration into their most ambitious album to date. Later this fall, Gorillaz will embark on a 22-date North American headlining tour. They’re also in the midst of a four-week run (through March 19th) of their House of Kong exhibition at Los Angeles’ Rolling Greens DTLA. And for even more Gorillaz visual delights, be sure to check out the accompanying The Mountain short film. Earlier this year, Consequence named Gorillaz’s self-titled debut album the 4th best album of 2001.
