If you’re worried about being filmed without realizing it, I’m looking at you, Karen, you’re probably going to want to know about this.
There’s a new app that alerts you if someone nearby is wearing SMART GLASSES. (If you didn’t know, Google Glass may have failed a decade ago, but smart glasses are making a major comeback.)
Many smart glasses feature video recording cameras, but they often look indistinguishable from regular eyewear. So the app supposedly clues you in.
The app is called “Nearby Glasses,” and it constantly scans for nearby signals that emit from Bluetooth-enabled tech, such as wearable devices made by Meta and Snap. There’s no iPhone app yet, it’s just for Android.
The concept IS good, because smart glasses are SURELY going to be increasingly controversial as they become more common. The app’s developer calls smart glasses, “an intolerable intrusion, consent-neglecting, horrible tech.”
(For what it’s worth, “Nearby Glasses” may not be ready for primetime yet. The reviews in Google Play are pretty mediocre for now. And even the guy behind the app admits it’s prone to “false negatives.”)
