A new trend on TikTok says you should start drinking water first thing in the morning, BEFORE sipping on your first cup of coffee. But is there any truth to it?
The claim is that drinking water as soon as you wake up promotes better hydration and cortisol regulation, and helps you replenish the fluids you lost while sleeping.
Plus, coffee has a mild diuretic effect, which can worsen dehydration first thing in the morning.
So is there any merit to it? A doctor and registered dietician both weighed in, and, it doesn’t really matter too much which one you drink first.
That’s assuming you don’t drink an excessive amount of coffee, like five cups back-to-back. And, also, that you DO eventually get your eight or more cups of water throughout the day.
But both experts do agree that drinking water in the morning is a healthy habit that hydrates you and kickstarts your daily water intake. So there’s no harm in trying it.
