If you’re house-hunting, are you looking for a modern, open-concept, renovated flip, like the ones HGTV is obsessed with, or do you just want a classic old place, straight out of the ’70s?
People online are talking about the “outdated” home design trends that should come back in-style, like:
1. A mudroom. Someone said, “I’m house-hunting here up north, and mud rooms are a necessity, especially with kids and dogs.”
2. More storage, again. “All these modern designs haven’t given storage a single thought.” (Honestly, everyone saw Marie Kondo and removed all the stuff that didn’t “spark joy,” and, shoved it into a storage unit.)
3. Real wood floors. “So-called ‘luxury’ vinyl plank (LVP) flooring looks cheap, plasticky, and slippery. Real wood is warm, and the dogs don’t slide all over it.”
4. Dining rooms that are large enough to host a large family gathering.
5. Glassed-in (or screened-in) front porches.
6. Dark wood and “orange” wood. “I hate the gray and white washed wood that’s everywhere these days.”
7. A (finished) basement. “That way, it can be a kids’ area, while the family room is more for adults.”
8. Detached garages. “For curb appeal. Who wants to look at a garage door that takes up 60% of the front of the house?” (Of all the things on the list, this was the most controversial, with many NOT wanting it detached.)
9. Glass block. “I had a home with a glass block window in the bathroom. It provides light and privacy.”
10. Laundry chutes. “It sucks lugging laundry up and down the stairs.”
11. Radiant heat, coming up from the floors. “Never have to wear socks or slippers in the winter, because the floors are warm.”
12. A built-in ironing board. “I love having all of my ironing stuff just in one spot, and it doesn’t get in the way like a traditional ironing board.”
13. Broom closets. “There needs to be a spot to store the vacuum and such.”
14. A cedar closet.
15. Claw-foot tubs.
