New & Upcoming Movies: “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and “The Housemaid”

1.  “Avatar: Fire and Ash”  (PG-13)  Trailer

A year after the death of their son, Jake and Neytiri encounter an aggressive Na’vi tribe called the Ash People.  They’re led by Oona Chaplin, who’s allied herself with Jake’s enemy the hybrid clone of Colonel Quaritch.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are back as Jake and Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver plays their daughter Kiri, Jack Champion is their adopted son Spider, and Stephen Lang is Quaritch, Spider’s actual father.

Miley Cyrus did an original song for this movie called “Dream as One”.  The next two movies, “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” are both currently in production and they’re scheduled to come out in 2029 and 2031.

 

 

2.  “The Housemaid”  (R)

A twisted psychological thriller starring Sydney Sweeney as woman takes a job as a live-in maid for a rich couple played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, who you’d know as Spencer Dutton on the “Yellowstone” spin-off “1923”.

Amanda looks completely unhinged in the trailer, leading you to feel instant sympathy for Sydney.  But she’s on parole and a potential manipulator, so the movie trying to keep you guessing as to which of them to root for until the end.

Profanity Warning:  There’s an F-bomb at 1:27 in the trailer.

 

 

 

3.  “The Spongebob Movie: Search for Squarepants”  (PG) Trailer

Spongebob tries to prove his bravery by following a ghost pirate called the Flying Dutchman, who wants to take him to the underworld to use him to lift a curse.  Mark Hamill is the Dutchman, Regina Hall is his pirate henchman and, of course, Tom Kenny is back as Spongebob Squarepants.

 

 

4.  And now, some limited releases you may or may not care about:

 

“Marty Supreme” starring Timothee Chalamet as an aspiring ping pong champion in the 1950s.  Gwyneth Paltrow and Fran Drescher are also in it.  The movie expands nationwide on Christmas Day.  (Trailer)

 

 

“Is This Thing On?” starring Will Arnett as a guy who stumbles into doing stand-up as a way of coping with his impending divorce from Laura Dern.  It’s directed by Bradley Cooper, who’s also in it as Will’s buddy.
