Five Random Facts for Thursday

Here are some random facts for you.

1.  The dot over a lowercase “i” or “j” is called a “tittle.”

2.  The Great Depression seemed so dire in the U.S. that in 1931, the West African nation of Cameroon sent New York $3.77 in hunger relief.  With inflation, that’s around $67 in today’s money.

3.  There are only two countries in the world that don’t have an official holiday celebrating their Independence Day or the day they became a nation:  The U.K. and Denmark.

4.  Austria derives its name from the German word for “East”, and Australia gets its name from the Latin for “South.”

5.  People in the Midwest are far more likely to say “um” than “uh”, people on the East Coast and in the South are far more likely to say “uh” than “um”, and people on the West Coast are split evenly between “um” and “uh.”
