Happy “Sesame Street” Day! Three Lessons from It That Apply to Adults

Happy Sesame Street Day!  It premiered 56 years ago on November 10th, 1969.  So most Americans living today watched it as kids at some point.

The PBS charity Next Avenue did a list a while back of “Sesame Street” lessons adults should never forget.

1.  Put down the ducky if you want to play the saxophone.  (???)  There was an old episode where Ernie wanted to play sax, but wouldn’t let go of his rubber ducky.  Translation:  Don’t take on too much.  If you want to try something new, you might need to leave something behind for now.  And that’s okay.

2.  Friends matter.  They’ve done countless skits about it, and it’s true for adults too.  More and more studies have found staying social as you age can help keep you happy, healthy, and extend your life.

3.  Celebrate yourself.  Kids are great at celebrating themselves.  But we tend to get more critical and reserved about it as we get older.  Remember to give yourself a pat on the back when you deserve one, or even when you DON’T think you deserve it.
