A man shot and killed in Sunday morning homicide near in southeast Louisville has been identified and police say he is the brother of the two men arrested for his murder.
Sunday afternoon, the Louisville Metro Police Homicide Unit arrested 37-year-old Darrel Burnett and 36-year-old Kiaira Paige for the fatal shooting.
The Jefferson County Coroner has identified the victim as 30-year-old Darryl Burnett Jr.
Police received a call around 2:55 a.m. regarding a shooting in the 1000 block of Brentlinger Park Drive.
When the police arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds to the head and leg. The man was taken to the hospital, where he unfortunately died from his injuries.
Police say Paige admitted to fighting the victim before shooting him in the leg with a handgun. They also say Darrel Burnett was seen on video fatally shooting the man with a rifle, which he later admitted to shooting.
Neighbors described the area as typically quiet and close-knit.
“It was very quiet. It’s beautiful. Everybody knows everybody. It just felt safe,” said Mary Kuerzi, Southeast Louisville resident.
Kuerzi said the violence has left her uneasy. “Unsettled for sure. My heart breaks for the kids and the families that live in this neighborhood,” she said, adding, “I just feel like I have to watch my back.”
Darrel Burnett has been charged with murder, and Paige has been charged with assault in the second degree.
Both men will be in court on Monday at 9 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing.
