Ice Spice says she’s more than comfortable with a little “friendly competition” with her fellow female rappers.
While speaking with Nylon for the magazine’s latest cover story, the 25-year-old rapper reflected on her rise over the past three years and how looking back at old interviews sometimes makes her cringe.
Nylon’s Iva Dixit recalled one of Ice’s interviews with Genius circa 2022, when she jokingly called herself a “two-hit wonder” in response to doubts about whether “Much (Feelin’ U)” would be her only hit.
“Clearly, I was just feeling, like, ‘Oh my God, I need to be better than my last time,’ you know?” she told the outlet.
“Honestly, the pressure’s great,” she continued. “I think the girls [in rap] also enjoy the friendly competition amongst each other. I feel like that’s what keeps the spark.”
Her sense of competition doesn’t extend to hostility, it seems. Despite years of rumored beef between them, Ice teamed up with Latto to release “Gyatt” earlier this month.
At the red carpet for the 2025 Video Music Awards, Entertainment Tonight’s Danny Directo asked her about the collaboration and how they ended any speculation of their rivalry.
“Of course, you know? We’re just girls, we’re just such pretty girls,” she replied.
On the other hand, Ice told Nylon she has an entirely different kind of relationship with Taylor Swift.
“The thing about Taylor is that she keeps it so real. Not even kidding, but one of the biggest things that I always think about that Taylor said is ‘As long as you keep making music, everything’s going to be fine,’” she recalled. “Every time we hang out, she’s not just giving me advice, you know what I mean? We’re talking about the food we’re eating or whatever’s going on in the moment … whenever I’m feeling doubtful or not as confident, having writer’s block no matter what it is, things like that really, really stand out to me,” she adds. “She said that to me a few years ago, and it still stood with me.”
Ice Spice also confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that fans can expect new music to drop this year. Last month, she teased a new single titled “Baddie Baddie” with a snippet on her social media channels.
