10 Things That Happened 10 Years Ago This Week

TheTopicalFruit.com did another round-up of 10 things that happened 10 years ago this week.  Here’s what was in the news a decade ago.

1.  Tom Holland was announced as the new Spider-Man.  He was 19 and we’d never heard of him.  He replaced fellow Brit Andrew Garfield in the role.

2.  Leonardo DiCaprio invested in a mattress startup.  People laughed because he knows his way around a bedroom.  The mattress company no one had heard of yet was . . . Casper.  Adam Levine and Tobey Maguire also invested.

3.  Diddy was in legal trouble.  He got arrested for allegedly assaulting a coach at UCLA where his son Justin was playing football.  The charges were eventually dropped due to a “lack of evidence.”

4.  Dustin Diamond from “Saved by the Bell” got four months in jail for stabbing a guy in a bar fight.  Sadly, Dustin died from lung cancer six years later even though he wasn’t a smoker.

5.  “Fo’ shizzle” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary.  Other terms they added that year included “sext,” “autotune,” “stanky,” and “hot mess.”

6.  A cat won ‘Dog of the Year’.  You might remember the video.  A loose dog attacked a kid in Bakersfield, California, and the family cat fought it off.  The SPCA’s L.A. chapter gave the cat its National Hero Dog Award.

7.  An Egyptian prank show made Paris Hilton think she was dying in a plane crash.  Or, that’s what it looked like.  TMZ later said she was in on the prank.

8.  We heard a “Top Gun” sequel was in the works.  It finally came out seven years later in 2022 and grossed $1.5 BILLION.

9.  The first “Inside Out” was a huge hit.  But one group of kids in Ohio were traumatized when a theater screened a different movie instead, the horror flick “Insidious: Chapter 3”.

10.  “Forbes” named Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris the highest-paid celebrity couple with combined earnings of $146 million.  They dated for just over a year.
