5% of American Adults Have Never Visited Another U.S. State?

Have you ever had a goal of visiting all 50 U.S. states?  A lot of us could cross a bunch of states off the list so far, but there are a few homebodies out there who would be starting from scratch.

In a new poll, 16% of American adults say they’ve been to 30 or more states.  Obviously that’s more common the older you get, but 5% of Gen Z’ers under 30 already have at least 30 under their belt.

Another 16% of Americans have been to 20 to 29 states, 28% say they’ve been to 10 to 19, 22% have been to five to nine, and 17% say they have been to less than five states.

In fact, 5% of adults say they have NEVER been to another state, other than the one they live in.

20% of people say it’s “very important” to them to visit a large number of states within their lifetime.  35% say it’s “somewhat important”, 28% say it’s “not very important”, and 17% say it’s “not at all important.”

Not surprisingly, the “most-visited states” are:  Florida, New York, Texas, and California.  The LEAST-visited are:  Alaska, North Dakota, Vermont, and Montana.

For what it’s worth, they didn’t define what a “visit” is, but it’s probably safe to say you have to at least drive through a majority of it, if you’re not actually staying there.  Just being at the airport in a state shouldn’t count.
