Miley Cyrus released her new album Something Beautiful on Friday, and on the song “Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved,” she seemingly throws shade at Dua Lipa.

The lyrics in question are as follows: “She speaks the perfect French/ She can dance the night away/ And still, she’ll never break a sweat.” While, sure, these could be about any woman that speaks French and can dance a lot without perspiring. But Dua Lipa checks all three boxes; she can speak French (certainly evidenced by her French-speaking cameo in Charli XCX’s recent “Talk Talk” remix with Troye Sivan) and she can definitely dance the night away (as stated directly in 2023’s “Dance the Night” from the Barbie soundtrack).

The final detail—that she’ll never break a sweat—is a bit more open to interpretation. It might be a nod to the viral “go girl give us nothing” meme from a few years back, which showed Lipa performing a rather simple and repetitive dance move to her song “New Rules.” Alternatively, it could be a subtle callback to “Dance the Night,” where Lipa sings about remaining unfazed emotionally—here, the “sweat” could symbolize vulnerability.

On the other hand, the phrase might be a sincere compliment to how effortlessly Lipa commands the stage, especially contrasted with Cyrus, who has openly struggled with similar expectations. Adding another layer, Lipa and Cyrus are rumored to have tension stemming from their 2020 collaboration on “Prisoner,” and they haven’t worked together since.

Whatever the case, it’s a curious reference. Perhaps in “Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved,” Cyrus isn’t so much teasing Lipa as she is confronting her own insecurities, measuring herself against Lipa’s seemingly unshakable composure.

Cyrus is joined on “Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved” by British model Naomi Campbell for the song, who backs up Cyrus in the bridge. Campbell is just one of several guests featured on Something Beautiful, which boasts contributions from producers Shawn Everett, BJ Burton, and Kid Harpoon as well as Ryan Tedder, Andrew Wyatt, Ryan Beatty, Brittany Howard, Alvvays’ Molly Rankin and Alec O’Hanely, Model/Actriz’s Cole Haden, and more.

Dua Lipa, on the other hand, is currently on tour in Europe supporting her 2024 album, Radical OptimismThe tour makes its way to North America in September; get tickets here.
