Sabrina Carpenter may be trading her espresso for some ouzo, as the pop star is being eyed for a role in an upcoming third Mamma Mia! film.

The casting rumor was reported by Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye, who sat with executive producer Judy Craymer to discuss Mamma Mia!’s upcoming Broadway revival and the future of the franchise. Craymer didn’t reveal much, but she’s looking at Carpenter to join the star-studded ensemble when they begin filming another Mamma Mia! sequel. As for her role? “She’d be a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep,” says Craymer.

Craymer remains “tight-lipped’ about a third Mamma Mia! film, but she does confirm it’s “on track” and in development and would aim to retain many of the first two film’s original cast: “Well, we know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen,” Craymer said cryptically, “And I mean, we brought together this amazing group of movie stars that were all connected through it and huge friendships evolved.”

Meanwhile, Craymer notes that Carpenter — who is a musical theater triple threat, an ABBA fan, and already a friend of Amanda Seyfried (according to Deadline) — would be a great way to tie in Gen Z’s embracing of both the original Mamma Mia! films and ABBA, with several TikTok trends from the movie popping up over recent years.

Carpenter will have to make room in her busy schedule, though, with a large slate of tour dates coming this summer and fall and headlining slots at both Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. Get tickets to see Sabrina Carpenter here.
