Four Weird Things That Make You Act Like a Jerk

1/7/2013

According to studies, if your job requires you to be creative, it might also be making you more DISHONEST.  Scientists at Harvard had people take a creative problem-solving test.  Then each person had to roll dice and self-report what number they got.  If they got a one, they got $1.  A two got $2, and so on.  It turned out that the people who did well on the creativity test were much more likely to lie so they'd get more money.  Basically, it's because you have to be creative to come up with a good lie.  So people who ARE more creative tend to feel more comfortable with lying in general.  Here are four more weird things that can make you act like a jerk.

#1.)  Just Looking at Alcohol Can Make You More Racist.  Researchers had one group of people look at ads for alcohol, and had another group look at ads for soda or water.  Then they tested how racist the people were by showing them pictures of white people and black people for a split-second, followed by a picture of either a gun or a tool, like a hammer.  Afterward, each person had to list what the pictures were, and those who saw ads for booze were more likely to mistake the tool for a gun . . . but only when it followed a picture of a black person.

#2.)  Wearing Knockoff Products Makes You More Dishonest.  In one study, two groups of women were asked to complete a math test for money, and the more answers they got right, the more they earned.  Both groups had to wear a pair of designer sunglasses while they did it, but half of them THOUGHT they were wearing KNOCKOFFS.  Then after they finished, they graded their own tests.  30% of the women who knew they were wearing designer sunglasses cheated and said they got more answers right then they actually did.  But in the group that thought they were wearing KNOCKOFFS, 70% cheated.

#3.)  Bitter Food Makes You More Judgmental.  Researchers gave people either a bitter drink, a sweet drink, or a glass of water.  Then they asked them about subjects they might be judgmental about . . . like incest or eating dog meat.  In the end, the people who had a BITTER drink were 27% more judgmental on average.  Apparently, it's because physical disgust actually triggers something in your brain that makes you more disgusted in GENERAL.

#4.)  Being Happy Makes You More Selfish.  Researchers tested it by having one group of people watch a comedy, and another group watch the depressing movie "Angela's Ashes".  Then they gave everyone raffle tickets for a raffle that didn't actually exist, and told them they were allowed to share their tickets with other people if they wanted to.  And they found that the people who had just watched the comedy were much more likely to keep all the tickets for themselves.
