A Man Makes His Last Mortgage Payment With 800 Pounds of Pennies, Not To Make a Statement, Just For Fun
7/6/2012
Normally when you hear about a guy paying off his mortgage in pennies you assume he's making a statement about the tyranny of mortgages or interest rates, and trying to stick it to the bank. Not Thomas Daigle of Milford, Massachusetts. He decided to pay off his mortgage in pennies, for fun.
Thomas says he was looking for a hobby, and decided to collect pennies so he could use them to make his final mortgage payment one day. Finally, after 35 years of saving pennies, he was ready to make his last payment. So he went to the bank with more than 800 POUNDS of pennies and made his final payment.
There's no word on how the bank reacted. But, we're guessing they were thrilled. He also didn't want to say how much money it was, but based on our rough math, it's between $1,165 to $1,450. (Penny weights have changed through the years.) Thomas says he did this to teach younger generations a lesson, "Do what you say you're going to do."
