Who Do You Think Won the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest This Year?

7/5/2012

It seems like a distant memory when TAKERU KOBAYASHI used to be untouchable in the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest.  Yesterday on Coney Island, 28-year-old JOEY CHESTNUT won the contest for the SIXTH straight year.  He beat Kobayashi in 2007 and has dominated every year since.

Chestnut ate 68 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.  That ties the world record he set in 2009 and comes out to somewhere around 18,500 calories.  His closest competitor this year "only" ate 52.  Chestnut gets $10,000 for the win.  Kobayashi hasn't competed in the contest for the past three years because of a money dispute with the people running Major League Eating and the hot dog contest.

44-year-old SONYA THOMAS . . . who weighs 100 pounds . . . won the women's title this year, eating 45 hot dogs and buns.
