It's Official: Adele's "21" Was the Best-Selling Album of the Year, Again

Billboard.com has released the final sales numbers for 2012, and as expected, ADELE'S "21" was the best-selling album of the year, for the SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR. 

That's never happened before, by the way.  "21" sold 4.41 million copies in 2012, after moving 5.82 million copies in 2011.  It was released in February of 2011.

Here are Top 10 Best Selling Albums of the Year, with their final sales numbers:

1.)  "21"Adele . . . 4.41 million copies

2.)  "Red"Taylor Swift . . . 3.11 million copies since its October release

3.)  "Up All Night"One Direction . . . 1.62 million copies

4.)  "Babel"Mumford & Sons . . . 1.46 million copies

5.)  "Take Me Home"One Direction . . . 1.34 million copies

6.)  "Believe"Justin Bieber . . . 1.34 million copies

7.)  "Blown Away"Carrie Underwood . . . 1.2 million copies

8.)  "Tailgates & Tanlines"Luke Bryan . . . 1.1 million copies

9.)  "Tuskegee"Lionel Richie . . . 1.07 million copies

10.)  "Night Train"Jason Aldean . . . 1.02 million copies

 

Here are a few more stats from Billboard.com:

Overall, U.S. album sales dropped by 4%, from 330.57 million in 2011 to 315.96 million this year.  CD sales fell another 13%, but digital album downloads increased by 14% to a record 117.68 million.

37% of all albums sold in 2012 were downloads.  That's up from 31% in 2011.

1.34 billion tracks were sold last year, which is also a record.  That's up 5% from last year's 1.27 billion tracks.  The top selling digital song was GOTYE'S "Somebody That I Used to Know", which was downloaded 6.8 million times.
