"Call Me Maybe" Almost Never Happened, Because Carly Rae Jepsen Was Supposed to Write a Folk Album
For better or worse, we were almost NOT blessed with CARLY RAE JEPSEN'S masterpiece, "Call Me Maybe". Why? Well, because she was SUPPOSED to be recording a FOLK album, but her heart wasn't in it.
She says, "I didn't want to. I wanted to write a pop album. And everyday, I'd go into the studio with every intention of writing a folk album, and I'd have all these pop ideas. At one point I threw my hands in the air and said, 'Well this is what I want to do. Let's break all the rules and just do it.'"
By the way, there's no word who this mysterious authority was that was demanding that Carly record a folk album. She's on a label run by JUSTIN BIEBER'S manager, and we'd assume he's cool with pop music. Regardless, "Call Me Maybe" could have been a folk song, and there are surely a million covers on YouTube to prove it. Here's one by BEN HOWARD.
