Steven Tyler Has Quit "American Idol"

There's at least ONE open seat at the "American Idol" judges' table.  Yesterday, STEVEN TYLER announced that he was quitting "Idol" to focus on AEROSMITH.

He released this Steven-esque statement:  "After some long, hard thoughts, I've decided it's time for me to let go of my mistress 'American Idol' before she boils my rabbit.   I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I'm back . . . but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I got two fists in the air and I'm kicking the door open with my band.  The next few years are going to be dedicated to kicking some serious ass.  'Idol' was over-the-top fun, and I loved every minute of it . . . [but] now it's time to bring rock back."

For what it's worth, a "source close to the show" says that it may not have been Steven's call.  The source says "Idol" might not have invited him back.  But Fox had this to say:  "We are very sad that Steven has chosen to focus more on his music, but we always knew when we hired a rock 'n' roll legend, he would go back to the music.  [We] would love to have him back on the show anytime."

There's still no word on the status of the other two judges, but you can read about that below.  JENNIFER LOPEZ admitted that she's thinking about leaving during an interview on the "Today" show yesterday, and we haven't heard anything from RANDY JACKSON.

Jennifer Lopez Says "Maybe It's Time" for Her to Leave "American Idol"

On the "Today" show yesterday, JENNIFER LOPEZ was asked about her future on "American Idol", and, well, there isn't much new to report.  She seemed genuinely torn over whether or not she wanted to do another season, but she's leaning toward going.  (Which is basically what we've been hearing.)

She said, "I've loved it so much . . . but I have to say that there are so many other things that I do that I put on hold for that . . . it's a heart-breaking decision if I'm going to have to go.  Everybody wants that definite 'yes' or 'no' . . . I've enjoyed it so much, but I am thinking that maybe it's time for me to go and do other things that I really love to do, like films . . . and performing."

You can find video of the interview at the "Today" show's website, or see it here.  The part about "Idol" begins at the 2:16 mark.)

Meanwhile, so-called "sources" tell Deadline.com that J-Lo is STILL in talks with "Idol", and that the negotiations are, "complicated and fluid".

And later yesterday, J-Lo said Steven leaving could play a role in her decision.  She added, "I can't even imagine anyone else there right now because I've just spent two years sitting next to him, it's hard to hear that he won't be doing it."

Is Randy Jackson Coming Back to "American Idol" as a Mentor, and *Not* a Judge?

"American Idol" is definitely in a state of flux.  STEVEN TYLER is gone . . . JENNIFER LOPEZ might be gone . . . and RANDY JACKSON could be out as a JUDGE, and return as a MENTOR.  It's unclear what this mentoring role would be, or if this was Randy's call or the show's.  But a source tells "Us" magazine, "[Show producers] think they need to freshen everything up now."

So who would take his place?  How about MARIAH CAREY?  The same source says, "They are in serious talks with Mariah and it's very close to being a done deal.  And they will move Randy into a more mentoring role."  For what it's worth, Randy is Mariah's manager.
